MR MARVIS is run by a small enthusiastic team of perfectionists. Being based in the centre of Amsterdam, we of course get to the office by bike. Together we work every day to live up to our promise to create MR MARVIS’ perfect shorts & trousers. It is this promise that drives us to continuously improve our products, choice of materials, production methods and ways of working.
The fact that we do not change the fit of our shorts & trousers, doesn’t mean that we do not improve our products. We do - especially when it comes to sustainability.
- Aafke, Head of Design
STYLE OVER FASHION
Knowing that the clothing industry – and especially fast-moving fashion – has a big environmental impact, we strive to bring a better and more sustainable product that proves that there is a better way for you and the environment.
It’s in our DNA to create slow fashion: well-thought-through durable garments that are not intended to end up as waste within one season. MR MARVIS chooses contemporary style over fashion, and small production batches over mass production. We never have overstock because we keep the design as it is over the years. We never incinerate unsold products at MR MARVIS: all materials and hard work of our skilled craftsmen and -women in Portugal will at one point be worn – and enjoyed – by our customers.
Our designs are timeless, the quality is long-lasting. This makes our customers extend their collection rather than replacing it.
PORTUGAL: PRODUCING CLOSE TO OUR CUSTOMERS
All MR MARVIS shorts & trousers are handmade in Portugal; near the markets we are active in. Made in Europe means a safe working environment and fair wages. Producing close to our main markets means limited environmental impact of transport.
Our partners – mostly small and family-owned – share our love for quality, and pride themselves over their craftsmanship. It’s these craftsmen and craftswomen that bring all the elements together that form the true lasting quality – and style – of MR MARVIS garments. We strive to build up robust and long-lasting partnerships; we are still with the same manufacturers we partnered with from day one.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT FABRIC
The Originals, The Piqués, The Seersuckers & The Longs
Sourcing the right fabric is a crucial first step in our journey for a more sustainable industry. As a minimum standard, MR MARVIS (stretch) cotton fabrics, linings, and trims are sustainable certified with the Oeko-Tex, STEP, and/or GOTS certification. For The Piqués and The Seersuckers, we went a step further by developing a 100% GOTS certified organic cotton fabric and organic cotton lining. Currently, we are also developing an organic alternative for The Originals.
The Originals, The Piqués, The Juniors and The Longs are all garment-dyed; giving them the colour we all like so much. This process is not possible without the use of water and chemicals. To reduce the impact on the environment, MR MARVIS works with Oeko-Tex, GOTS, GRS and REACH certified dyehouses in Portugal who have a license to use water from the river nearby, use it in the dying process, treat it subsequently in order to return clean water back to the river. The dyehouses use as little water as possible, which also applies to the - REACH certified - chemicals used in the process. This is of importance to the environment, to the people that work with these materials during the production process, to us and it might be to you.
The Swims & The Sports
Our single colour swim shorts are made from Oeko-Tex certified polyamide and dyed according to REACH standards. For our sports shorts, we are proud to announce that our full collection is made from recycled post-consumer plastic bottles. Welcome to the future of fashion.
SMALL STEPS MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE
MR MARVIS garments do not come with spare buttons that in 99.9% of the time end up as waste: with every button we don't send, we save a little waste. And on the rare occasion a button comes off, you can contact us directly and we are happy to provide you with a new one for free. Our packaging, hang tags, printed materials, etc. are all made of recycled - the majority - or partly recycled materials.
THE ULTIMATE GOAL: ZERO WASTE
MR MARVIS’ goal is to close the loop by using recycled materials for the production of our garments and to find ways for making new products from textile production waste, tattered, and / or damaged garments. As an example, we are now developing a beach towel made from recycled shorts and other cotton-based garments. We are constantly thinking of ways to reduce waste, with the ultimate goal to have no waste at all. We accept that this is a gradual and – maybe – imperfect process, in which we are keen to learn from others and inspire others at the same time. Please let us know if we can learn from you, if we inspire you, or both: let’s reach this goal together!
