The Originals vs. The Piqués - The differences explained

We often receive questions about the differences between our Original and Piqué shorts. While the fit is the same, there are certainly differences. Time for some shorts education...

The Fabric
The Originals
are made of a stretch cotton blend (99% cotton and 1% elastane), with an unmatched super soft finish. Our fabric is Oeko-Tex certified, meaning that the fabric is produced in a sustainable way.

The Piqués are named after the fabric they're made of: an airy, woven fabric with a textured waffle look. It is similar to the fabric a polo shirt is made of, but with more structure, so it’s perfect for our shorts. The fabric is developed especially for us in Portugal and is made of 100% organic cotton.

The Fly

The Originals have a button fly while The Piqués have a zipper fly. What do you prefer?

The Details Make the Design

Do you like details? Great, so do we! You can find details like the super comfortable elasticated waistband and our signature hidden pocket in both The Originals and The Piqués. Differences in details are the closure button, which is hidden for The Piqués, as well as the MR MARVIS logo at the bottom hem, which is embroidered on The Originals but silver-coloured on The Piqués.

Try both types of perfect shorts and choose your favourite style!

Be Marvellous, B Corp: our 2023 Action Report

Since March 2023, MR MARVIS has been the largest Dutch clothing brand with the B Corp Certification. As a B Corp, MR MARVIS is counted among businesses spearheading a global movement for an inclusive, equitable and regenerative economy. As part of our B Corp identity, we're committed to publishing an Action Report every year. In this report, you can read everything you need to know about our efforts and plans concerning sustainability and social responsibility. You can find the full report via the link below. To give you a sneak peek, here are some highlights that are shared in the report:

    • In 2023, 21,913 garments were reconditioned and 1,117 were repaired, preventing them from going to waste.
    • With Justdiggit we've set a target to regreen 1,460 hectares in Tanzania.
    • In 2023, we donated €116,901 to charities.
    • By switching to organic cotton for The Longs, we saved 46 tons of CO2. This equals 46 hot air balloons.

For those who missed the memo: what is B Corp again?

B Corps (short for Benefit Corporations) are commercial companies that meet high standards of conscious decision-making. B Corps commit to public transparency and legal accountability to balance profit with purpose for people and the planet. To become a Certified B Corporation, a company has to do the so-called B Impact Assessment (BIA). This is an elaborate questionnaire that assesses a company on five impact areas: Governance, Customers, Workers, Community and Environment. It sounds simpler than it actually is: it requires a certain type of company DNA and – in our case – more than two years of preparation to take the right steps. Companies need to score at least 80 points (out of the total 200) to become a Certified B Corp. In the Netherlands, the average score is 83.7 points. MR MARVIS scored 101.7 on the B Impact Assessment. A score to be proud of.

To keep the B Corp status, companies must recertify every three years. Since we certified in 2023, 2026 will be our moment of truth again. That may seem far away, but we are ambitious and given the changes we're looking to implement, it's really just around the corner. To make these changes happen, we've thought out 50 projects to undertake in 2024. Some initiatives are already in the making: for example establishing a Justice, Equity, Diversity and Inclusion (JEDI) committee, collaborating with other like-minded B Corps from the fashion industry to tackle industry challenges together and developing a MR MARVIS recycling program.

How we're balancing out our carbon footprint

Just over one year after launching our partnership, we’re excited to share more about our on-going collaboration with Justdiggit, a grassroots organisation that fights global warming through regreening projects in Africa. Justdiggit joins forces with local partners and communities in their mission to restore dry, degraded land within the next ten years.

As part of our ambitious goal of becoming net zero by 2030, we’ve been balancing out our carbon footprint through regreening projects with Justdiggit since April 2021. These projects, however, go way beyond carbon sequestration: they aim to rehabilitate degrading landscapes on a large scale, benefiting nature, biodiversity and local communities.

    ABOUT JUSTDIGGIT

So why did we decide to partner with Justdiggit? In addition to its incredible achievements so far, Justdiggit sets itself apart by focusing on restoring degraded land – tree stumps, specifically – rather than planting new forests, which has a lower survival rate. The organisation uses proven Sustainable Land Management techniques to enable tree stumps to regrow into full-fledged trees. These stumps already have established root systems, and as they’re often indigenous to the land, they’re well adapted to the hot, dry climate. This strongly increases their survival rates in comparison to new trees planted. In Central Tanzania, this intervention is locally referred to as Kisiki Hai, which translates to Treecovery. Restoring vegetation in dry, degraded areas benefits the soil’s water availability, as the root systems make the land more porous, which means more water is able to seep deep into the soil. Strong vegetation also prevents erosion and flooding and improves overall soil health, allowing plants and trees to continue growing.

    SO WHAT’S NEXT?

We’re excited to continue our partnership with Justdiggit, balancing out our carbon footprint while supporting them in their efforts to regreen Africa. Our primary focus, however, is and will remain on reducing our emissions, as we work towards becoming net zero in 2023. Stay tuned!
